The Elizabeth Detention Center in Elizabeth, NJ may be closing in the near future. Most immigrant detention centers are owned by private companies that lease out their spaces to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Elizabeth Detention Center is owned by Elberon Development Group, and its owners are planning to terminate its lease with CoreCivic, the private company that houses detainees for ICE.

In a statement to immigration advocates, Elberon explained its reasons for planning to terminate its lease with CoreCivic: “As supporters of many important educational, social service, and religious organizations in the community, we want our values mirrored in our work. We believe that each business has the right to determine its own path forward. We now have shared ours.”
